Animal Welfare in Emergencies

The workshop is uniquely designed for local government officers to better understand the considerations relevant to their authorities planning for Animal Welfare in Emergencies.

Program presenters will include various industry experts and representatives from relevant Western Australian government agencies. 

This three day incident response workshop will include both theoretical and hands-on skills development and will incorporate:
  • Information on the State Support Plan for Animal Welfare in Emergencies
  • The consideration for Local Government Plans for animal welfare in emergencies (PAWE)
  • Reporting and communications – chain of command for emergency management 
  • Contributing to safety at incidents involving livestock and fauna in emergency situations/common scenarios 
  • Managing conflict situations in an animal control and regulation environment 
  • Livestock identification and reporting programs on both National and State levels
  • Low stress livestock and safe fauna handling in emergency situations (does not include venomous reptiles) 
  • Safely containing and transporting livestock and fauna 
  • Best practice animal husbandry 
  • Work, health and safety when dealing with wildlife
  • Livestock health and welfare, feeding and basic first aid
  • Practical aspects of setting up an animal welfare centre 
  • Species identification and specific skills related to the main species of animals encountered in emergencies
  • Humane euthanasia and how to comply with animal welfare requirements
At the end of the program, participants will be able to confidently and effectively work as part of the team responding to and supporting any animal welfare emergencies in their local community and throughout Western Australia.

Course Fee

Animal Welfare in Emergencies Grant Program is funded by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD).

To be eligible for a training grant, the application must be made by a Local Government and their representatives in Western Australia.

On approval of this grant, the Local Government Authorities must fund the training. On attendance all workshop cost will be reimbursed by the DPIRD under this grant. 

All accommodation and catering are included as part of this grant.

Suitable for:

Local Government staff who have a direct or indirect role in safeguarding animal welfare in emergencies are encouraged to apply to attend the training. This includes, but is not limited to: 
  • Emergency Management Officers; 
  • Community Safety Officers;
  • Local Government appointed Community Emergency Services Managers; and 
  • Rangers.

Accommodation:
